206 : Plaque of a Gentleman, c. 1900
Antique Pietra Dura Plaque of a Gentleman
A wonderfully fine antique pietra dura plaque of a gentleman with a cane in a later frame.
Dressed in eighteenth century costume, he has a beautifully aloof expression befitting a gentleman of his importance. The mosaic stonework of this plaque is marvellous: the thin banks of lapis in his tricorn; every button picked out beautifully; the intense red jasper of his breeches… Notice the fine work on the key fob hanging from his waist.
Although unsigned, this is undoubtedly from one of the principal craftsmen. A marvellous plaque.
