Antique Pietra Dura Plaque of a Musketeer
Florence, Italy, c. 1890
A nice, small antique pietra dura plaque depicting a musketeer on a black marble base using a variety of other coloured marbles along with lapis lazuli, sard and chalcedony in his outfit. The bright blue of his cape and the orange of his jerkin create a striking contrast with the dark background – he certainly cuts a dash.
The frame is later but works well with the piece. Note there is a small chip to the black marble on the right hand side of the piece which, whilst just about visible in the image, does not intrude too much on the piece overall.
