1120 : Paillard (?), c. 1880

Antique Drum and Bell Music Box probably by Paillard of St Croix, c. 1880

Sold

A fine quality, great-sounding 6 bell and drum antique music box most probably made by Paillard of Saint Croix, Switzerland in c. 1880.

The fully refurbished movement has 6 bells, 4 of which are engraved, and 2 of which are mounted by bird finials. The bells also have 2 bird strikers. The centrally positioned drum has 8 beaters, and both the bells and drum can be silenced at will. The movement also features a double spring for longer playing time.

This lovely music box plays a selection of 8 operatic and popular airs with a very fine sound. The tunes are detailed on the replacement tunesheet. The case is veneered in an unusual wood, probably birds eye maple with tulipwood inlay and boxwood stringing. There is also a very decorative ormolu key escutcheon, and decorative ormolu carrying handles to the sides.
