1188 : Paillard, c. 1880
Antique 9 Bell Mandolin Music Box by Paillard, c. 1880
Sold
This is a superior quality mandoline music box made by Paillard of St Croix, Switzerland in c. 1880.
The fully serviced musical movement features 9 engraved bells struck by bird strikers and a mandolin arrangement to the comb and cylinder with a particularly rich and complex sound. It plays a selection of 6 operatic tunes as listed on the original tunesheet.
The case is also of excellent quality: inlaid burr walnut with a brass and ebony cartouche to the lid, ormulu carrying handles and an ebonised plinth to the base. It is of the very best quality and all the more unusual thanks to the mandolin arrangement on a bell box, especially one with such a fine sound.
