Antique Bell & Hidden Drum & Castanet Music Box by Nicole Freres, c. 1875
A most unusual and beautiful quality drum, bell and castanet antique music box made by Nicole Freres of Geneva, Switzerland in c. 1875.
The musical movement features 6 exposed bells mounted on a rack with a lyre-shape mount, each struck by swallow strikers. There is also a decorative non-striking bell in the centre.
However, this music box also has the unusual feature of a hidden drum and a hidden castanet, both of which can be disegaged at will. This combination is very rare and we have not seen it before.
The music box plays a very nice selection of 6 well known operatic tunes by Gounod, Verdi and Offenbach amongst others as detailed on the original tunesheet, and all play with a fine sound.
This is housed within an inlaid rosewood case with lozenge motif inlays to the lid and front.
