1089 : Nicole Freres, c. 1864

Antique 4 Overture Music Box by Nicole Freres, c. 1864

Sold

A magnificent example of a 4 Overture antique music box made by the prestigious firm of Nicole Freres, Geneva in c. 1864.

The original tunesheet details the four overtures that this box plays, all of which are highly desirable: William TellSemiramide and Gazza Ladra by Rossini, and Auber’s Fra Diablo. The Gamme number 1112 is also listed on the tunesheet.

The sound is superb, complex and complete as you would expect from an overture box of this quality. The movement has been fully overhauled to put it in excellent condition. The fat cylinder is 31cm / 12 ¼” long and 8cm / 3 ¼” in diameter. Both the maker’s mark and the serial number are stamped on the bedplate, and “Nicole Freres” on the comb.

The box is wound by a detachable ratchet kept in a compartment to the right of the box. The case itself is rosewood with an elaborate floral inlay to the lid, along with an interior dust lid.

A rare and rather special music box, and a pleasure to listen to.
