Antique 8-Air Music Box by Nicole Freres, c. 1868
A beautiful quality 8-air antique music box in a particularly nice case made by Nicole Freres of Geneva, Swtizerland in c.1867.
It has an unusual tune selection, playing 5 quadrilles from the Grand-Duchesse of Gerolstein, written by Offenbach in 1867 although mistakenly attributed to Straus on the tunesheet here. In all likelihood this music box was produced soon after the premiere of Offenbach's operetta, to make the most of its popularity.
The movement has been fully serviced and is in excellent condition, with a really fine sound. It is lever-wound and sits underneath an interior dustlid within an inlaid rosewood case. The inlay to the lid is particularly nice, with two prancing griffins and a central arrow device.
Overall, this is a particularly nice example of an 8-air Nicole Freres music box, with some unusual features that make it stand out as a little bit special.
