Antique Full Orchestral Music Box by Mermod Freres, c. 1880
A fine quality full orchestral antique music box made by Mermod Freres of St Croix, Switzerland in c. 1880.
The movement features a snare drum, 6 engraved bells struck by bird, butterfly and bee strikers, a woodblock castanet, a 21-note reed organ, and two zither bars.
The music box plays a selection of 10 airs, including ‘Boccaccio’, ‘Silver Thread Among the Gold’, ‘The Bohemian Girl’, and ‘HMS Pinafore’.
It comes within a rosewood case with a beautiful pastoral inlay of a shepherd playing a flute to the lid, together with a rural inlay to the front.
The underside of the lid is veneered in rich birds-eye walnut, and the case also features gilt carrying handles to the sides.
All told, a beautiful and attractive full orchestral music box.
