Antique Music Box with Mandarin Automata by Mermod Freres, c. 1890
An unusual 6 bell antique music box made by the presitgious firm of Mermod Freres of St Croix, Switzerland in c. 1890.
The bells feature a colourful array of three Mandarin Automata strikers who move their heads as the strike the bells.
The movement also features a number of quintessential Mermod Freres mechanisms: a combined tune indicator and selector dial, and a parachute safety check (glinting on the right in the video). The bells can be disengaged at will.
This music box plays a selection of 12 well-known operatic tunes as detailed on the later tunesheet.
The case is faux rosewood grained with an inlaid rosewood lid.
