Antique Drum, Bell & Castanet Music Box, Swiss, c. 1885
This is a great quality orchestral antique music box. The musical movement features 6 engraved bells surmounted by birds and struck by a colourful array of butterflies and bees, as well as a drum with 8 beaters and a castanet.
The movement has been fully restored and make a wonderful spectacle. It plays 10 mostly operatic tunes, as listed on the very decorative tunesheet. This movement was possibly made by L'Epee in c. 1885. Some of the teeth have been replaced but to an expert standard.
This is all contained within a beautiful burr walnut case inlaid with kingswood, and with gilt carrying handles to the sides. It also has the unusual (later) addition of miniature claw and ball cabriole feet.
It is a very impressive box with a lovely sound and a great selection of tunes.
