Antique 6 Drum & Bell Music Box by George Bendon, c. 1880

Sold

A fine quality antique music box made by George Bendon of Geneva, Switzerland in c. 1880.

The musical movement features 6 engraved bells struck by a delightful array of figurative strikers – 4 hummingbirds, 2 flowers, and 1 butterfly. The central drum features 8 beaters. Both the bells and the drum can be disengaged and re-engaged at will using the levers at the front of the three combs. The governor is stamped with the mark ‘AP & Co’, most probably a retailer’s stamp.

The music box plays a selection of 12 operatic tunes of the era as detailed on the original George Bendon tunesheet. The serial number 46106 is also listed on the tunseheet.

This is all housed within a beautiful veneered case with boxwood stringing to the front and lid, as well as a classical cartouche inlaid to the lid in a variety of woods.
