Antique 12 Air Music Box by George Baker, c. 1880

Sold

A good sounding antique music box made by George Baker of Geneva, Switzerland in c. 1880.

The musical movement plays a good selection of 12 well known operatic tunes including Aida and The Barber of Seville (shown in the video), as well as the Magic Flute and Feyshultz, all detailed on the original tunesheet that a child has used for writing practice at some time in the past.

On the cylinder there is also a sign of this music box’s past, a copper-coloured stain we have not been able to remove but which does not affect the sound in any way.

This is all housed inside a veneered rosewood case with tulipwood banding and a brass, ebony kingwood and mother-of-pearl cartouche to the lid.

Note also that the inside of the lid and the glass dust lid are inlaid in birds eye maple – a nice touch of quality.
