Rare coin-operated Carousel Antique Music Box, Swiss, c. 1890
A very rare and exquisite carousel antique music box with a Forte Piccolo movement by Paillard playing six airs, including the Blue Danube. The hexagonal carousel has 12 horses with riders, three swingboats with doll passengers, 2 dancing dolls, and an organ grinder who labours away as the carousel spins. The case is veneered in walnut with elegant ebonised columns.
When an old English penny is inserted into the slot, the movement plays two tunes while the carousel revolves, the 2 dolls dance, and the organ grinder winds his machine. This is a superb, rare collector’s piece in great overall condition. There are some signs of wear to the carousel as would be expected after approximately 120 years – a testament to how much pleasure this music box has given to many generations past.
