Antique Mandoline Quatuor Cylinder Music Box by Samuel Troll, c. 1870
An exceptional quality Mandoline Quatuor antique cylinder music box made by Samuel Troll, in c. 1870. The fat cylinder creates an extremely subtle sound, playing 6 operatic airs in beautiful arrangements including “Faust” and “The Blue Danube”. The cylinder measures 17 ¼” / 44cm in length and 3” / 8cm diameter. The case, rosewood veneered and banded with kingwood, has a fabulous brass inlay of two butterflies to the lid. The tunesheet, although damaged, is original, with the “Mandoline Quatuor” hand-drawn on the tunesheet.
This box comes from a private collection formed some 35 years ago when boxes of this quality were still available. Nowadays music boxes like this rarely come to the market. It is something really special – a connoisseur’s music box from a bygone era.
