Antique Interchangeable Theatre Cylinder Music Box by Mermod Freres,
c. 1895
A magnificent and unique theatre interchangeable cylinder music box (also
known as a Station Box), in an exquisite inlaid burr walnut cabinet.
The sublime harmony movement is by Mermod Freres, c. 1895. Almost uniquely,
this
box has
a dancing
butterfly automaton (something I have never seen before), alongside 4
dancing dolls (replaced). The movement has a tune indicator, tune selector,
parachute safety check and speed regulator. There are three cylinders,
each playing 6 tunes. They are extra large size (20” long x 3 ¼” diameter),
making for a superb quality of sound. The cabinet, although not original,
is of the finest quality and is quite stunning.
All together, a very rare, wonderful and impressive piece, with a beautiful
sound and great visual effect.
